Agricultural Development Programs

Farming is the main occupation of rural dwellers. The agricultural professionals among our team of volunteers build up farmers’ skills in Fish farming, poultry keeping, Cassava cultivation, Vegetable Production, Bees keeping, Sheep and goats rearing.

The sheep donation chain

This was initiated in our target communities for improved livelihood of the community people. Five (5) sheep were donated to the villagers who after one year were expected to donate 5 sheep too to the next village until the scheme spread through the whole area. The scheme not only improves the people’s livelihood but also promotes the spirit of giving and social relationship between the various communities.

Introduction Of Improved Crop Variety And Technology To Farmers.

Through collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical (IITA), improved cassava cuttings and maize seeds with the cultivation technology are introduced to the farmers who give testimonies of improved yield.

Training Workshops for farmers on local poultry keeping and bee-keeping

The farmers are trained on local poultry keeping, adopting the participatory learning and action (PLA) techniques.

Bee-keeping

Farmers in 4 villages were trained on bee-keeping and the bee-keeping project was initiated among their peers in four (4) villages in Laniba, Balogun, Faleye and Oluwaseyi in Akinyele LGA of Oyo State. The harvested honey was sold and the proceeds shared among the farmers. The farmers are now independent modern bee-keepers

Biotechnology

Total Development International Foundation is committed to the use of biotechnology as a tool to advance agricultural development. To this effect, we are engaged in the following activities:

Promotion of awareness about biotechnology and its products through regular publications in one of our organs called Income Opportunities. Income Opportunities is published every fortnight and circulated free of charge to all categories of people in Nigeria.

  • We provide updates about biotechnology to a wide range on Nigerians electronically. For this purpose, we keep a database of Nigerians working in biological sciences.
  • We provide updates about biotechnology to science journalists in Nigeria and other countries in West Africa. We have a database for this purpose too.
  • We carry out awareness campaigns among different sectors of the Nigerian society. We do this mostly in collaboration with other agencies like the Nigerian Agriculture and Biotechnology Project which is a USAID funded project implemented by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture
  • We conduct training programs on bioresources. Frequently, we conduct training on biogas production, snail rearing, grasscutter rearing, aquaculture and others.
